The digestion of feed in horses is greatly influenced by microbial fermentation in the hind gut. With billions of bacteria and hundreds of different species, the bacterial population of your horse’s gut can have a big influence on both performance and general health. Bacteria flourish by the fermentation of non-digestible feed components (fibre). As a by-product of this fermentation volatile fatty acids (VFA) are produced. These VFA’s help maintain the intestinal ph at such a level that the harmful bacteria cannot proliferate.

Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS)

Nutri-Gut contains a special Pre-biotic kind of sugar known as a short chain fructo-oligosaccharide (scFOS). Derived from sugar beet, the FOS passes into the large intestine undigested. Once there, scientific trials have shown that it acts as a food source for friendly bacteria such as lactobacilli and bifobacteria which are able to digest it and therefore proliferate. This therefore helps give a normal ph of the digestive tract avoiding the development of harmful bacteria such as salmonella and E.colli. This good balance of microflora gives the animal improved digestive comfort.

Mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS)

MOS is an indigestible carbohydrate compound extracted from the cell walls of a specific type of yeast. In scientific trials it has been shown to bind on to harmful micro-organisms in the digestive system such as Clostridium. E.coli and Salmonella, which would otherwise attach themselves to the gut wall and compromise the animals health. As the MOS cannot be digested it passes through the digestive system taking the harmful bacteria away with it.
